What Is an MSO for a Trailer?


The MSO, short for Manufacturer’s Statement of Origin, is an official document created by the trailer’s manufacturer. It certifies that the trailer is brand new and has never been registered or titled before.


Think of it as proof of origin - it confirms that the trailer was built by the manufacturer and hasn’t passed through another owner or DMV system. Without this document, you can’t legally register your trailer for highway use in most states.

What About the MCO or Manufacturer’s Certificate of Origin?

These are simply alternate terms for the same document:

  • MCO = Manufacturer’s Certificate of Origin

  • Manufacturer’s Statement of Origin = MSO

Some states or DMVs may use one term over the other, but they refer to the same piece of paperwork. If you see either abbreviation, they’re asking for the MSO.
