1. States Requiring Titles for All Trailers

These states require a title for any trailer, regardless of size or weight:


  • States: Alabama, Arizona, Colorado, Idaho, Montana, Nebraska, Nevada, New Mexico, Oklahoma, South Dakota, Utah, Wyoming

2. States Requiring Titles Based on Weight

In these states, a title is typically required if the trailer exceeds a specific weight threshold (often 3,000 lbs or 4,000 lbs):


  • States: Arkansas, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Maine, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Ohio, Tennessee, Texas, Virginia, Wisconsin

3. States Requiring Titles for Commercial Trailers Only

In these states, you usually need a title for trailers used for business. For trailers used for business. You may not need a title for personal trailers.


  • States: Connecticut, Delaware, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania

4. States With Minimal or No Titling Requirements

Some states have relaxed trailer titling laws, especially for smaller trailers.


  • States: New Hampshire, North Dakota, Vermont


These states may still require a bill of sale and registration.


5. Special Requirements in Select States

Certain states have unique titling and registration rules:
